Lately I have become obsessed by "Get Rich Quick" and "Multi Layer Marketing" schemes. I am probably just spending too much time on the internet. However, that doesn't stop me being annoyed by them. The worst thing is that they are everywhere.
For starters there are the wild claims, then we have the badly designed websites, moving on to a really ropey story and finally the many "calls to action" which include the obligatory call now to receive a special one day only discount. Believe me if you check the site tomorrow, the same offer will apply.
Now, none of these sites are particularly new and they all have the same business model and basic modus operandi:
They put together a course, an instructional videos and loads of other stuff that is readily available for free and they offer a money back guarantee. The guarantee will be riddled with clauses and it tends to be for a short period of time. Let's face it anyone who has been involved with affiliate marketing knows how long it can take to set things up when you first start, hours turn into days, days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months. By the time a newbie gets their first site up and running the guarantee will be over.
I don't know about anybody else in the Affiliate Marketing world but it is a constant source of irritation when I hear about the easy life and the big bucks everybody is earning. We can all point to success stories but I am pretty sure in the beginning these "Super Affiliates" put in a ridiculous amount of hours, slaving over a hot keyboard well into the wee small hours, learning their craft by trial and error.
Another thing to remember is that there weren't all the easy content units and web 2.0 back in the day. There are actually Super Affiliates out here in the ether that developed bits of programming we all now take for granted.
So there you have it, the basic premise of all the Get Rich Quick nonsense you read out here on the web blown apart. The secret is.....there is no secret!
However, the other day I came across a new one on me. That's not to say it hasn't been around for ages. As I mentioned I have been rather preoccupied of late with this kind of thing and I decided to follow an Ad Link to a Make Money Fast offer. Before you read on remember, the House always wins and in this case so does the Affiliate.
It was the offer of a tried and tested method for winning money playing online roulette. Anything that deals with gambling and systems to beat the house worry me. The system was completely free, a gift, an act of philanthropic altruism. Who would have thought that in this day and age anybody would be so kind?
After being given the system for free, you are told that it works best on specific roulette websites and just for convenience links are provided to the website. How thoughtful.
You have to admire the next bit, you are then asked if you win big to come back and make a contribution to show your appreciation.
Here is what has just really happened:
You have been given a worthless system to beat the house that you could have got from a book about roulette. If you think about it there is a free one online, you have just been looking at it.
You have been directed to an affiliate programme that the website owner gets paid for getting you to join.
Sure, this is almost a victimless crime but it is misleading and some people could end up gambling more because of their belief in the newly acquired system. Nobody loses except the gambler but that's ok because they were going to lose anyway. You can make up your own mind on this ethical issue.
There is no secret formula to instant success and wealth through the internet. There is no system that will beat the house. The fact is, it is all hard work and determination but eventually you get your reward and it is fantastic.
For some reason people won't believe it. Unfortunately though there are many that believe groups of millionaires get together to give away the secrets of being a millionaire for $99.99.
My advice to any would-be affiliate marketers:
1) Get yourself a basic understanding of wordpress (used by most affiliates to build websites)
2) Build a couple of small sites
3) Join an affiliate marketing forum
4) Teach yourself search engine optimisation.
All of these things are free as long as you have an internet connection and a computer.
My name is Malcolm Murphy and for many years I have worked in the consumer finance industry here in the UK. The last 4 years have been spent working as the Head of Online Sales for a financial research company supplying banking data to many of the UK's leading consumer finance websites. During this time I have learned all of the tricks used by other consumer finance websites.
http://www.thebestbestbuys.com is a no-nonsense consumer finance website that people in the UK can trust. The site does not make its money from selling financial products or selling users data as leads, instead it makes money from adverts and the Discount Codes it carries.
You can find our blog at, http://thebestbestbuyscom.blogspot.com/.
The Best Best Buys was not set up to make millions of pounds or to eventually float on the stock exchange, it was set up as an antidote to all of the consumer finance websites out here in the ether that treat consumers with utter contempt while pretending to be "Consumer Champions."
Remember....big isn't always best and in most cases it ain't beautiful either.
