Affiliate business opportunities are among the best ways to get started online and earn real money. However, there are all sorts of scam artists out there who want to sell you unrealistic dreams and rip you off. Stay away from them! Affiliate marketing is a fun and legitimate way to get going on the internet-- but you have to start off in the right way. Here are three tips to help you do exactly that, and to help you be profitable from the get-go.
1. Start out small.
My first bit of advice is to start out small. When you sign up to be an affiliate for a product, you are typically given some simple marketing tools to use. These may include banner ads, text ads, email ads or an entire sales page. To start with, use these materials exactly as is.
When you are just starting out, you need to get comfortable with the basic principle of affiliate marketing before you develop your own marketing tools. That principle is: Find a product and get traffic to the sales page. That's the entire affiliate business in ten words!
Spend time keeping things small just so you can get a handle on that process, and (hopefully) make your first few sales commissions.
2. Start out cheap.
Remember: you're not making any money at this point, so you haven't got money to spend. You cannot expect to ever earn real money if you are in the red at the very start! So, I urge the beginner to allow each stage of his or her learning process to finance the next stage.
The big, advanced marketers can afford to spend many thousands on PPC advertising if they want and still make it pay, but you are most likely not yet in that league. So, use the two cheapest traffic sources available: article marketing and forum marketing.
In your articles, provide useful advise to the reader, and tell it from your own personal perspective. Don't just clone all the other marketers who are just trying to get a sale. Affiliate marketing opportunities are like any other business. And that means: People will buy your message only if they buy YOU first-- so make YOU the primary "product".
Same with forums, but with the added caution that you are now addressing a much more targeted group who are passionate about their subject-- that's why they are on a forum to begin with! Get to know the leading voices in your forum, and learn to treat others with respect and courtesy. Focus on people, not products-- and you stand a good chance of getting plenty of good traffic to your affiliate site, and make some sales!
3. Start building your empire.
Up to now, you have built slowly and cheaply, using the simplest marketing methods. Your articles and forum posts have built you a little bit of a reputation as someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about their niche. Now it's your turn: start developing your own site.
The reason is twofold. First of all, your own site allows you to develop your "brand" further, and second, it allows you to build in a sign up box where you can invite people to join a newsletter, access a free report or free giveaway product, or receive updates from you on what's new and hot in your niche. This type of "captive traffic" is where fortunes are really made.
Be in no doubt you can make a ton of money being an affiliate, but you are not truly in business for yourself until you have your own mailing list of people who have gotten to know you, and to whom you can sell over and over and over again.
To recap: Start out simply, using the marketing materials you are given; develop your "brand" by publishing good quality articles and forum posts, and then use that foundation to really build your own empire. Be willing to experiment, and expect failure from time to time. Affiliate business opportunities are wide open to the ordinary man or woman in the street. They represent perhaps the only chance you and I have to ever earn real money on the internet, but only if we start off on the right foot. Above all, take Churchill's advice: never, never, never quit!
